What age group is most typically affected by hydrocephalus?

Hydrocephalus is most commonly seen in infants and young children. This age group is particularly affected due to conditions present at birth, such as congenital hydrocephalus, as well as those that can occur during early childhood, like infections or brain injuries. The developing brain is sensitive to changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) balance, which can lead to an accumulation of fluid in the brain's ventricles, causing increased intracranial pressure.

In contrast, while hydrocephalus can occur in other age groups, including adults and the elderly, it is much less common. Adults may develop acquired forms of hydrocephalus due to conditions like tumors, trauma, or infections, but these occurrences do not match the prevalence seen in infants and young children. Additionally, hydrocephalus is rare in teenagers, making infants and young children the most affected demographic.
